| Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: How does it feel to have your debut album Road to Bloodshed be described in press as a "bold etching in the pages of metal history"?
Jared Maceachern: Where was that? (Laughs) We never planned it that way, but I guess it's cool. We just wrote what we felt was right for us. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: What was it like recording with masters, Jason Suecof and Colin Richardson? Jared Maceachern: We actually only recorded with Jason, but he's amazing and a good friend. Colin is a legend too. It was pretty sweet to hear that he was actually excited to mix our record. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: When writing for the album, what inspired Road to Bloodshed and are any of the tracks leftover from previous demos before being signed to Roadrunner Records? Jared Maceachern: We just wrote songs that we would like to hear and play and Road to Bloodshed is the result. Oh, beer was an inspiration, too! (Laughs) There are a couple of leftover tracks, but you'll have to wait to hear them! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Speaking of Roadrunner, from what I heard you guys didn't have it easy before being signed. You gave Monte (Roadrunner) an EP and he in turn said he wanted to hear more so you not only had to write new songs but also go back into the studio in which the band had to take a loan to pay for and have a benefit for the rest of the money. So, when an unsigned band asks you what it takes, I think the word determination just about sums it up. Would you agree? Jared Maceachern: I totally agree. When young band guys ask me how to get signed, I tell them, never quit, ever! We all decided a long time ago that we were going to do this or die trying. Hard work does pay off. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Tell me a bit about the song Flatline. I got the feeling it's about a person who's terminally ill when you say, "another unfamiliar ceiling". Lyrically, the songs pretty deep. Jared Maceachern: I sometimes say during our set that that song is about what may or may not happen to you after you die. It's just a small glimpse of different ideas about death. Deep like the abyss! (Laughs) Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: You recently filmed a video for the track Beneath the Machine. Why did you choose that particular song for the video and can you tell us a little bit about the shoot? Jared Maceachern: We all felt that it was a really strong track, and basically a rockin’ song! We shot the video in our friends tattoo shop with a big thanks to Jay Chastain and Empire Tattoo in Asheville, NC, and we did it over about 48 hours of almost non-stop shooting. We had worked with director Ramon Boutviseth and crew before on the Zeppo video, so it was like hanging out more than actual work. (Laughs) Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: How would you compare your vocal work today as opposed to when you were younger. I read that you actually sang in a church choir, which is a pretty huge difference from what your doing now! (Laughs) Jared Maceachern: I think my vocal work now is more aggressive and fitting than ever before. I've actually been through a couple of vocal styles over the years, and the choir was just the beginning. Those early experiences not only helped me with my clean vocals, but my guitar playing as well, in terms of hearing harmonies and the like. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: What do you feel makes Sanctity stand apart from the rest, especially with so many bands nowadays being carbon copies of one another musically? Jared Maceachern: I wish I knew because I'd patent that shit! (Laughs) We just wrote music that we like. I think it's hard nowadays to make music without someone saying it sounds like something else, but we just do what we feel and don't worry about anyone else, and we like to have fun with it. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: The band is currently on tour with the band Trivium who actually founded Sanctity. How does it feel to be direct support for a band that was a direct link and resulted in Sanctity being signed to Roadrunner? That has to feel pretty awesome! Jared Maceachern: Well, those guys have been friends of ours since we met a few years ago, and we always talked about touring together. We've been having a blast on this European tour. We've been having a blast just hanging out and jamming! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Jared, thanks for the interview. I'll definitely check you out on the road. With that said, do you have any final words for The Metal Web!? Jared Maceachern: Definitely come see us at the show! We love playing live, so get ready for a good time! If you pick up a copy of Road to Bloodshed, make sure to crank it up and rock your face off! OFFICIAL SITE "SANCTITY": http://www.sanctityweb.com HOME |
